High-Priced Steakhouse Waiters Busted In Elaborate Credit Card Theft Scheme

Dozens of current and former waiters at high-priced steakhouses in Manhattan, New Jersey and Connecticut were busted in connection with a scheme to steal credit card information from wealthy customers, authorities announced today.

Among those arrested were employees of upscale restaurants like Smith & Wollensky, The Capital Grille and Wolfgang Steak, as well as Morton’s in Stamford, Conn., and The Bicycle Club in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

The waiters allegedly targeted customers who paid with high-limit credit cards, authorities said.

The scammers are accused of using handheld scanners to copy credit card data and then sending the information to the leaders of the ID theft ring.
