Three white Chicago teenagers have been arrested after they beat and placed a noose around the neck of a black teenager, the Chicago Tribune reports. Their apparent motivation was his relationship with a white girl who is the cousin of one of the attackers.
In the attack, which occurred on Dec. 23 in the home of one of the attackers, the teenagers pulled out rope, wrapped it around the black teenager’s neck and yelled racial epithets at him as they beat him. One of the attackers also pulled a knife on the victim. The victim escaped and informed his family and authorities.
The teenagers, ages 16, 17 and 18, were booked and charged with hate crimes on Jan. 10. The victim, 17, and the attackers all went to Brother Rice High School, which is also investigating the incident.
