A tourist at Eldgjá volcanic canyon in southern Iceland unknowingly joined a search group that was looking for her. The woman described as “Asian, about 160cm, in dark clothing and speaks English well” by the town’s local newspaper, was listed missing on Saturday. Tourists and the ‘missing’ woman spent hours Saturday night looking for her. Helicopters were on standby to assist the 50 people commuting via foot and vehicle with the search.
It wasn’t until 3AM on Sunday morning that the group and the woman realized they were searching for her. Chief of police in Hvolsvöllur Sveinn K. Rúnarsson told local reporters that the woman simply didn’t recognize the description of herself, and “had no idea that she was missing.” The mixup occurred when the ‘missing’ woman left the tour bus to change her clothes and freshen up. When she came back, her busmates didn’t recognize her and she didn’t recognize the description of herself during the search.
